| Reverse description | A two-figure encounter scene commemorating Hadrian's imperial adventus to Hispania. Hadrian stands to the right in military dress, raising his right hand in greeting and holding a volumen (scroll) in his left; facing him stands the personification of Hispania to the left, draped, proffering a patera in her extended right hand and holding an olive branch in her left. Between the two figures stands an altar, at the base of which a bull is typically depicted, anticipating the sacrificial rite. The exergual field is plain, and the senatorial authority for the bronze issue is indicated by the S C in the field. The composition is characteristic of the Hadrianic provincial adventus series, celebrating the emperor's well-documented tour of the western provinces circa AD 130–133. |
