| Reverse description | Standing figure of Hadrian to the right, wearing military attire, his right hand raised in a gesture of adlocutio (address or greeting), his left hand holding a volumen (scroll). Facing him stands the personification of Arabia to the left, depicted as a draped female figure holding a patera in her extended right hand and a bundle of cinnamon sticks or aromatic branches in her left — emblematic attributes of the province's famed spice trade. Between the two figures stands a small altar, at the base of which a bull is typically depicted, signifying sacrificial welcome. The composition commemorates Hadrian's adventus (imperial arrival ceremony) in the province of Arabia during his eastern tour. |
