Reverse description The personification of Libertas stands facing left in full figure, draped in a flowing stola. In her raised right hand she holds a pileus (the felt cap symbolising freedom and the manumission of slaves), while her left hand extends a vindicta (rod or sceptre), the ceremonial staff used in the Roman rite of manumission. The monumental letters S C (Senatus Consultum) flank the figure in the field to either side, authorising the bronze issue by decree of the Senate. A dotted border frames the entire composition.
