| Obverse description | Right-facing bust of Emperor Theodosius II, diademed with a pearl and jewelled diadem from which pendant strings of pearls fall beside the face, draped and cuirassed. The effigy is rendered in the refined late antique style characteristic of Constantinopolitan gold coinage, with finely engraved hair swept back in parallel ridges beneath the diadem. The paludamentum is fastened at the shoulder, and the cuirass is visible at the breast, ornamented with pteryges. The obverse legend surrounds the bust within a beaded border. |
