Additional information

Caesaraugusta — modern Zaragoza — was a veteran colony founded by Augustus around 14 BC, and its local magistrates took their minting authority seriously. The duoviri whose names this coin carries, Sex. Aebvtivs and L. Lvcretivs, held the senior civic magistracy of the colony, and their appearance on the bronze coinage was as much a public record of office as any inscription on a public building. Colonial mints in Hispania operated with considerable autonomy during Tiberius's reign, issuing denominations the central Roman mint had largely abandoned.
