Additional information

Caesaraugusta — modern Zaragoza — was a Roman colony founded around 14 BC for veterans of the Cantabrian Wars, the brutal decade-long campaign that brought the last independent peoples of Hispania under Roman control. The duoviri named in this issue's legend were local magistrates, a standard feature of colonial bronze coinage in the western provinces, where Rome delegated monetary administration to municipal authorities while retaining tight control over silver and gold.

The Cantabrian veteran connection is not incidental: the colony's identity was built around that military settlement, and its early coinage reflects civic pride in that foundation myth.
