Obverse description Armored and draped bust of Charles Emmanuel I, Duke of Savoy, facing right, wearing an elaborately ruffled collar and a ducal crown, with curled hair rendered in fine detail. The portrait is struck in high relief in the prevailing late-Renaissance manner, displaying ornate armor with decorative scrollwork at the shoulder. The circular Latin legend surrounds the effigy, reading CAROLUS EM D G DUX SAB P P E C, identifying the ruler as Duke of Savoy by the grace of God. The flan is irregular and broad, characteristic of hammered coinage of this period. A beaded inner border frames the design.
