Obverse description Central field features the Genoese castle (Castello), a stylized gothic tower or gate with flanking turrets and decorative elements, rendered in a bold hammered relief characteristic of early sixteenth-century Italian coinage. The heraldic castle motif, symbolic of the Republic of Genoa, is set within a plain inner circle bordered by a beaded inner ring. The surrounding marginal legend in Latin reads ANTONIOTVS ADVRNVS GENVE DVX, identifying Antoniotto Adorno as Doge of Genoa, with the lettering distributed around the full circumference of the flan.
