A piedfort — struck at double the normal die depth on a thicker blank — was never intended for circulation. The Monnaie de Paris produced these as presentation or approval pieces, submitted to colonial administrators or ministry officials before a design was authorized for mass production. This particular sapeque pattern dates to the period when French Indochina's coinage was still being rationalized across Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos under a unified administration, and approval pieces like this one document decisions that were often reversed before a coin ever reached a market stall.
Lecompte's Indo-China reference lists very few piedfort survivors for this type.
