The 1899 sapeque patterns for French Indochina were struck at the Paris Mint as trial pieces ahead of regular coinage production, testing both the design and the bronze alloy proposed for the circulation series. The sapeque itself was a deliberate concession to local monetary custom — the traditional Vietnamese sapèque was a cast copper-alloy coin with a square hole, and French colonial authorities recognized that introducing a wholly foreign form would meet resistance in rural commerce.
Lec Indo#4a distinguishes this variety within a small group of closely related pattern strikings from the same year. Survivors outside institutional collections are rarely encountered.
