Additional information

The 1878 Sapèque essai was produced at Paris as France worked to rationalize coinage for Cochinchine française, its colony in southern Vietnam. The sapèque denomination was deliberately designed to approximate the cash coins already familiar to the local population — a pragmatic concession to existing monetary habits in the region. Essais of this type were struck in limited numbers for official examination and were never released into circulation, which explains why survivors retain sharp detail despite their age.
