| Reverse description | The celebrated Volto Santo of Lucca depicted as a robed and crowned figure of Christ crucified upon a tall cross decorated with fleur-de-lis and dotted ornaments, the corpus dressed in a long ecclesiastical garment (colobium), with radiant glory rays emanating from behind the cross in a striking sunburst pattern filling the field. The entire composition is framed by the circular Latin legend SANCTVS VVLTVS, reading around the periphery within a milled border. The image reflects the ancient Byzantine-style crucifix venerated in the Cathedral of San Martino in Lucca, a defining emblem of Lucchese coinage. |

| Additional information |
Lucca's republican government survived as a sovereign city-state well into the Napoleonic period, an anomaly among Italian polities that had long since fallen under foreign dominion or princely rule. The bolognino denomination itself was a medieval accounting unit that Lucca retained in name long after it had ceased to reflect any practical monetary relationship with Bologna.
MIR 233 places this among the later republican emissions before Napoleon dissolved the republic outright in 1799 and installed his sister Elisa Baciocchi as ruler.
