| Obverse description | Central field bears the crowned Portuguese royal arms — a shield of five escutcheons in cross arrangement, each charged with five bezants, flanked by the castles of the bordure — surmounted by a royal crown. Mint mark 'L' (Lisboa) appears to the left of the shield and engraver's initial 'G' (Gaspar Pais) to the right, both positioned in the field. The circumferential legend in Latin capitals reads SEBASTIANVS I REX PORTVGALIÆ ET, running around the full perimeter of the coin. The die work is characteristic of mid-sixteenth-century Portuguese hammered gold coinage, with bold relief on the arms and a slightly irregular flan. |
