Reverse description A bold ornate cross, of the Order of Christ type with flared terminals, occupies the central field and divides the coin into four quadrants. The denomination numeral 8 appears in the upper-left quadrant and the letter X (for Xerafins) in the upper-right quadrant, while the date is split across the lower two quadrants, with the first two digits of the year at lower-left and the final two digits at lower-right. The cross is rendered with characteristic Goan hammered workmanship, exhibiting slight irregularity in strike consistent with hand-produced coinage of the period. The overall design follows the established format of Portuguese Indian gold coinage of the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
