Obverse description Central crowned Portuguese royal coat of arms within a segmented geometric border, dividing the mint letters G and A to the left and right of the shield. The legend IOANNES V R P runs around the periphery in Latin characters, interrupted by the mint mark initials. The overall design is executed in the angular, deeply incuse style characteristic of hammered gold coinage produced at the Goa mint under João V. The shield displays the traditional Portuguese quinas and castles, rendered in a stylized manner consistent with early eighteenth-century Indo-Portuguese coinage.
