Obverse description The crowned Portuguese royal arms displayed at centre, featuring the traditional escutcheon with five bezants arranged in cross formation on the central inescutcheon, surrounded by the seven castles of the bordure, all surmounted by the royal crown. The date 1862 appears in the lower field beneath the shield. The encircling legend reads LUDOVICUS I · PORTUG · ET ALGA REX · interrupted at the base by the date, with a reeded border framing the entire design.
