Reverse description The reverse is essentially blank, characteristic of a counterstamp trial piece applied to a host coin. Faint ghosted remnants of the underlying host coin's design are visible in the copper field, including traces of what appears to be a portrait or bust, consistent with the piece having been struck over an existing coin. No purposeful legend or device was engraved for this side.

Additional information

Tukoji Rao II ruled Indore under increasing British pressure following the 1857 uprising, during which the state's own troops had mutinied and the Maharaja's position became diplomatically precarious. This trial piece dates to that immediate aftermath — 1858 was the year the East India Company was dissolved and the Crown assumed direct authority, reshaping what coinage rights a princely ruler could realistically exercise. A copper striking of a rupee denomination is inherently anomalous; rupees were silver by convention, making this a pattern produced to test dies or demonstrate authority rather than circulate.
