| Obverse description | Unadorned right-facing bust of Emperor Alexander III, depicted with a short beard and mustache in a plain truncation, occupying the central field. The circumferential Cyrillic legend reads Б.М. АЛЕКСАНДРЪ III ИМПЕРАТОРЪ И САМОДЕРЖ. ВСЕРОСС., interrupted at the lower portion of the coin by the commemorative inscription КОРОНОВАНЪ ВЪ МОСКВѢ / 1883, denoting the coronation in Moscow. The engraver's initials Л.Ш. (for Leopold Steinman) appear on the truncation or nearby field. The portrait is rendered in a restrained, realistic style characteristic of late Imperial Russian medallic art, with a beaded inner border framing the entire design. |
