Obverse description Central shield bearing the rampant lion of Gelderland, surmounted by an ornate crown with decorative mantling flanking the sides of the escutcheon. The entire device is set within a beaded inner circle. The surrounding legend, reading clockwise in Latin, is interrupted at the top by the date. The composition is characteristic of late sixteenth- and early seventeenth-century Dutch provincial hammered coinage, with somewhat irregular flan and bold relief on the armorial device.
