| Obverse description | Epigraphic type with no figurative imagery, typical of Fatimid gold coinage. The field is entirely occupied by four lines of bold Kufic script arranged horizontally within a plain inner circle, containing the Shahada and the Quranic verse of the mission (Quran 9:33). The legends are struck in high relief on a flat, unadorned field. The outer border consists of a rope or pellet-and-dash decorative ring framing the inscription. The flan is irregular, as characteristic of hammered Sicilian tari production. |
