Obverse description Armoured bust of Emperor Rudolph II facing right, holding an upright sword in the right hand, with a mintmark positioned above. The field is divided by four small heraldic shields arranged cruciformly, representing the cities of Nijmegen (top), Roermond (right), Arnhem (bottom), and Zutphen (left). The circular Latin legend is interrupted by the four shields and runs between the bust and the coin's edge. The composition is characteristic of late sixteenth-century hammered coinage, combining imperial portraiture with the civic heraldry of the Duchy of Gelderland.
