| Additional information |
Issued to mark the bicentennial run-up campaign launched by the French government a full five years before 1989, this piece was part of Monnaie de Paris's early commemorative program intended to build public awareness for what would become one of the most elaborately state-managed anniversary celebrations in modern French history. The 1984 date places it at the moment the official bicentennial commission — eventually headed by Edgar Faure and later restructured under Michel Baroin — was just taking shape.
Florentine bronze, a matte-surfaced alloy associated with French medallic tradition rather than circulating coinage, signals this was always intended as a collector and institutional piece.
