Reverse description Standing allegorical figure of Liberty, helmeted and in classical warrior dress, holding a long spear upright in her right hand, positioned centrally in the field. To the left, the ruins of the Bastille fortress are depicted in low relief, while to the right, a fallen figure and billowing fabric suggest the chaos and triumph of the storming. The dates 1789 and 1989 flank the central figure at mid-field, commemorating the bicentenary of the fall of the Bastille. The curved legend BICENTENAIRE DE LA PRISE DE LA BASTILLE arcs around the upper periphery, with BR FLO and the Roman numeral III inscribed in the lower exergue area.

Additional information

This piece belongs to a series commissioned by the Monnaie de Paris in anticipation of the French Revolution bicentennial, which would not arrive until 1989. The six-year lead time was deliberate — the project was conceived under the Giscard administration and carried through the political transition to Mitterrand's socialist government, which ultimately oversaw the full commemorative program. Florentine bronze, a matte-finished alloy favored for its resistance to fingerprint oils, was chosen specifically to distinguish these collector issues from standard currency strikes.
