Obverse description Left-facing bust of Liberty as a young woman with long, flowing hair streaming in the wind, a Phrygian cap atop a pole resting on her right shoulder. The legend LIBERTAS · AMERICANA arcs around the upper field, with the date 4 JUIL. 1776. inscribed in the lower exergue beneath a horizontal baseline. The mirror-polished proof field provides strong contrast to the finely detailed relief effigy.

Reverse description Allegorical scene in high relief depicting a helmeted Minerva, representing France, advancing with a spear and a fleur-de-lis-adorned shield to protect the infant Hercules, symbolizing America, who is shown seated on a shield strangling two serpents, while a rearing leopard representing Britain is repelled. The engraver's signature DUPRE appears in the lower right field; the Monnaie de Paris cornucopia and MdP hallmarks appear in the lower exergue alongside the two commemorated dates. The legend NON SINE DIIS ANIMOSUS INFANS, a quotation from Horace, arcs around the upper field.
