Additional information

The original Tryggvasonpenningen — struck under Olav Tryggvason around 995–1000 AD — is among the earliest coins associated with Norwegian royal authority, produced when Olav was actively using Christianity and English-trained moneyers as instruments of political consolidation. The prototypes were heavily influenced by Anglo-Saxon penny designs, almost certainly because Olav had spent years raiding and operating in England before seizing the Norwegian throne.

This 2000 restrike marks the millennial anniversary of Olav's death at the Battle of Svolder.
