Reverse description The reverse depicts a schematic representation of a cathedral or church façade in elevation, shown with a pitched triangular pediment above a rectangular body, flanked on either side by pellets or annulets. Within the body of the building the place-name COLO / NIA is inscribed in two lines, referring to Cologne (Colonia Agrippina). The outer legend HERIMANN AICHIEPS encircles the design, identifying Archbishop Hermann II of Cologne. The composition follows the characteristic Ottonian-Salian denier type struck at Cologne in the early eleventh century.
