The Confederate $500 note of 1864 (Pick 73) was issued under conditions of catastrophic inflation — by that point in the war, the Confederate dollar had lost the vast majority of its purchasing power, and a $500 denomination was barely a functional unit of value. The February 1864 currency reform, which compulsorily funded older notes into bonds at steep discounts, was meant to reduce the money supply but largely failed to arrest the collapse.
This example is a replica. Modern reproductions of Confederate currency are common and range from crude novelties to reasonably faithful facsimiles — the Pick 73 type is among the most frequently copied.
