Richmond's municipal fractional notes of 1862 were a direct response to the near-total disappearance of coin from circulation across the Confederacy — hoarding accelerated so rapidly after secession that small change became practically unobtainable within months. Cities, counties, merchants, and even individual businesses issued their own scrip to fill the void, with varying degrees of official sanction.
This is a replica. The originals are collected as part of the broader Civil War-era "shinplaster" category, a term already in derisive use by 1862.
