Toppan, Carpenter, Casilear & Co. was one of the dominant American security printers of the mid-nineteenth century, later absorbed into the American Bank Note Company in 1858 — which raises an immediate question about any note bearing their imprint dated 1860. By that point the firm had formally merged, and surviving examples attributed to Toppan, Carpenter post-1858 typically used transitional plate stock printed before the consolidation. Whether this replica reproduces a genuine issued note or a specimen is the more useful line of inquiry.
Sanford, Maine chartered several small financial institutions during this period, though their issue histories are poorly documented in the major references.
