João I's accession in 1385 followed the crisis of the 1383–85 interregnum, when Portugal's throne was genuinely contested by Castile. The new Avis dynasty needed functional coinage quickly, and the Porto mint — historically secondary to Lisbon — was pressed into active service to meet that demand. The "small disk" designation distinguishes this type from a heavier, broader issue of the same nominal value struck concurrently, a parallel production arrangement that was administratively unusual for the period.
Billon quality varies considerably across surviving examples, reflecting the monetary instability of the early Avis years.
