Obverse description Central field displays the Gothic monogram 'IOЕН' (Juan) surmounted by a royal crown with fleur-de-lis finials, all within a plain inner circle. A beaded inner border separates the central device from a wide legend band carrying the royal motto in Gothic lettering. The design is struck on an irregularly shaped flan typical of hammered medieval Castilian coinage, with bold, deeply incuse lettering throughout.
