| Obverse description | Central field displays a crowned Gothic letter 'E' (for Enrique) enclosed within a lobate or cusped inner border, the crown rendered in high relief above the monogram. The device is surrounded by a beaded inner circle, beyond which runs the peripheral Latin legend separated by a cross paterned stop. The overall design is characteristic of the hammered coinage of Castile, with bold, angular lettering and an irregular flan typical of mid-14th century Iberian minting practice. |
