| Obverse description | Central field displays a crowned royal monogram composed of an interlaced Gothic 'E' surmounted by a large open crown with fleurs-de-lis finials, all enclosed within a dotted inner circle. Four smaller crowns occupy the cardinal positions around the central device, separated by a beaded inner border. The surrounding legend in Gothic Latin characters runs clockwise along the periphery. The coin exhibits the characteristic irregular flan and uneven strike typical of medieval Castilian hammered coinage. |

Enrique II's claim to the throne was contested from the start — this coinage was struck during the civil war against his half-brother Pedro I, whom Enrique's forces (backed by French mercenary companies under Bertrand du Guesclin) ultimately defeated at Montiel in 1369. Pedro was killed there, and Enrique's Trastámara dynasty went on to rule Castile for over a century. These reales belong to the legitimizing monetary output of a pretender who had not yet won.
