| Reverse description | A goshawk (açor) depicted in profile occupying the central field, rendered in low relief with characteristic curved neck and folded wings, a traditional heraldic symbol of the Azores. António I's claim to the Portuguese throne lasted barely a year. Proclaimed king in Santarém in June 1580, he was defeated at the Battle of Alcântara by the Duke of Alba within weeks, sending him into a flight that would end in exile in France and England. The Angra mint, operating out of Terceira in the Azores, was one of the few places where his authority was physically enforced long enough to produce coinage — the island held out against Castilian control until 1583.
This copper real is among the most tangible artifacts of that defiant interlude.
