Obverse description Crowned royal coat of arms of France and Navarre displayed centrally in the field, featuring the fleurs-de-lis of France quartered with the chains of Navarre, surmounted by an ornate crown. The shield is flanked by the crowned monogram 'L' on either side. The circular legend surrounding the shield reads LVDOVICVS XIII D G A FRAN ET NAV REX, identifying Louis XIII as King of France and Navarre by the grace of God. The coin is struck on a roughly-shaped billon flan characteristic of hammered coinage of the period, with a beaded inner border.
