Additional information

The TR POT XVII dating places this quinarius in Tiberius's second year as emperor, shortly after Augustus's death in 14 AD transferred power without the civil conflict Rome had spent decades dreading. The quinarius aureus denomination was struck only intermittently under the Julio-Claudians — far less frequently than the standard aureus — making surviving examples considerably rarer than their full-weight counterparts despite being issued from the same imperial mint at Lugdunum.

RIC I 5 is a recognized scarcity in the series. Lugdunum's dies from this period show consistent workmanship, though the smaller flan of the quinarius left less margin for centering.
