Obverse description Bare head of Augustus facing right, rendered in fine portraiture characteristic of the Lugdunum mint, with short curling hair swept forward over the brow. The effigy is set within a beaded border that runs along the coin's periphery. The legend AVGVSTVS is inscribed to the left of the portrait and DIVI F to the right, identifying Augustus as the son of the deified Julius Caesar. The modeling of the face is naturalistic yet idealized, conveying imperial authority in the Hellenistic tradition.
