| Reverse description | The mint name PISAVR (Pesaro) is presented in abbreviated form across three lines within a plain inner circle, the letters rendered in the bold, somewhat irregular hand typical of hammered Renaissance billon coinage. The inner circle is enclosed by a continuous laurel wreath border, the individual leaves clearly articulated and forming a decorative surround that fills the field to the coin's irregular edge. An outer beaded border is visible along portions of the rim. The overall design is simple and functional, serving primarily to identify the place of minting. The reverse fabric shows characteristic die-shift and flan irregularity consistent with hand-struck production at the Pesaro mint. |

Francis Maria I della Rovere's tenure as Duke of Urbino was anything but stable — he was expelled from the duchy twice, first by Pope Julius II in 1508 and again by Pope Leo X in 1516, who handed the territory to his nephew Lorenzo de' Medici. Francis Maria retook Urbino by force in 1521 after Lorenzo's death. Billon small change struck across this fractured thirty-year window reflects a mint operating under a ruler who spent substantial portions of his reign in military exile or open conflict with Rome.
