Obverse description Laureate and long-haired draped bust of Louis XIII facing right, rendered in high relief in the classical Roman manner by engraver Jean Warin. The king's flowing locks and laurel wreath are finely detailed, conveying a powerful regal effigy. The date 1640 appears in the lower exergue beneath the bust. The surrounding legend, interrupted by the portrait, reads LVD · XIII · D · G · FR · ET · NAV · REX, identifying the monarch as King of France and Navarre by the grace of God. The coin's broad flan and bold relief are characteristic of this landmark issue, which introduced the Louis d'or coinage.
