Reverse description A boldly rendered Cross of the Order of Christ occupies the central field, its arms flared and ornamented with a quatrefoil rosette at each angle between the arms, conveying the crusading heritage of the Portuguese crown. The date appears prominently at the top of the field, flanked by pellet stops. The surrounding Latin motto IN HOC SIGNO VINCES ('In this sign thou shalt conquer') runs around the periphery, punctuated by five-pointed star stops, all within a finely executed beaded border.
