Obverse lettering IIII DENIERS MONNOIE
(Translation: Coin of four Deniers...)
Reverse description Central field bears a floriated or pattée cross with pellets in the angles, surmounted by a fleur-de-lis or decorative finial, enclosed within a beaded or plain inner circle. The surrounding circumferential legend reads DE CAMBRAY 1588 in Latin capital letters, completing the denomination and mint inscription begun on the obverse. The hammered strike is irregular, consistent with emergency production, and the flan shows typical billon surface corrosion. The design reflects the rudimentary die-cutting associated with siege coinage produced under duress.
