Reverse description The reverse bears a two-line inscription enclosed within a wreath of laurel, the traditional Roman symbol of victory and imperial authority. The letters S C, standing for Senatus Consultum, are boldly rendered within the wreath, signifying that this bronze issue was struck by authority of the Senate, as was conventional for Roman aes coinage throughout the Principate. The wreath is tied at the base and its berried branches frame the legend symmetrically. The overall style is austere and utilitarian, in keeping with the modest quadrans denomination.
