Issued under Augustus by the tresviri aetere argento auro flando feriundo — the three-man mint commission whose abbreviated title fills the coin's legend — this quadrans belongs to a series that effectively restarted Rome's small bronze coinage after decades of neglect. The denomination had fallen out of regular production during the civil war period and was revived under Augustus largely to facilitate everyday market transactions that gold and silver could not practically serve.
RIC I 465 is one of several quadrans types from this magistrate series, each attributed to a different tresviri collegiate rotation. The specific officials named on this issue remain unidentified by name in surviving literary sources.
