The Iltirta mint, located in what is now Lleida in Catalonia, served the Ilergetes — the same people whose leaders Indibilis and Mandonius allied with Carthage against Rome during the Second Punic War, then switched sides, then rebelled again before their final defeat in 205 BC. By the time these bronzes were struck, the Ilergetes were firmly under Roman provincial administration, yet the mint continued producing indigenous coinage with Iberian script, a concession Rome routinely permitted in Hispania Citerior to ease local commerce.
The quadrans fraction is the smallest denomination in this civic series.
