Obverse description Draped bust of Pylaemenes III portrayed in the guise of Herakles, facing right, with a club resting over his right shoulder and a lion's skin knotted at the throat. The heroic assimilation to Herakles serves as a dynastic legitimizing device common to Hellenistic royal portraiture. The rendering is in the established Hellenistic style, with bold, slightly idealized facial features. The field is plain, with no visible legend or exergual inscription on the obverse.

Additional information

Pylaemenes III ruled Paphlagonia as a client of Rome following the collapse of Attalid Pergamon in 133 BC, when Rome inherited the region through the will of Attalus III. His epithet Euergetes — "Benefactor" — was a common honorific among Hellenistic dynasts, but in his case it may reflect deliberate alignment with Roman patronage rather than any popular civic gesture. The dynasty would survive only until Nicomedes IV bequeathed Bithynia to Rome in 74 BC, after which Paphlagonian autonomy effectively ended.
