Obverse description Central field dominated by the raised checkered shield of Urgell, composed of alternating raised square bosses arranged in a checkerboard pattern across three rows, characteristic of the comital arms of Urgell. The shield is flanked on either side by a partial circular legend in Latin, with the abbreviated inscription CO:MS (Comitissa, meaning Countess) distributed around the shield. The lettering is rendered in a crude, early Gothic style typical of small hammered billon or brass coinage of the Catalan counties in the early fourteenth century. The flan is irregular and shows the uneven striking common to hand-hammered issues of this period.
