Obverse description Central device depicting a simpulum (ladle used in Roman religious libations), shown in profile facing right, rendered in low relief. The simpulum is a distinctly Roman priestly implement, its inclusion on a Judaean prutah reflecting the Roman prefect's authority. Surrounding the central motif, the Greek legend ΤΙΒΕΡΙΟΥ ΚΑΙCΑΡΟC LΙς (of Tiberius Caesar, year 16) is arranged in a circular fashion within the field. The flan is irregular and slightly convex, typical of hammered provincial bronze coinage of the period.
