Archelaus inherited half of Herod the Great's kingdom in 4 BC but was denied the title of king by Augustus, who made him ethnarch instead — pending good behavior that never materialized. He ruled Judea, Samaria, and Idumea for ten years before a joint Jewish and Samaritan delegation traveled to Rome to petition Augustus directly for his removal, an almost unprecedented act that succeeded. He was deposed in 6 AD and exiled to Vienne in Gaul, at which point Rome converted his territory into the province of Judaea under direct prefectural administration.
