Obverse description The allegorical figure of Neuchâtel, depicted as a nude male warrior holding a sword in his right hand, reaches upward toward a flag being presented by the helmeted allegory of Helvetia, who stands to his right bearing a shield. In the background, a cityscape of Neuchâtel and armed soldiers are visible in low relief, with radiating sunbeams emanating from the upper field. The legend '1ER MARS 1848' arcs across the upper field, and the engraver's signature 'Huguenin Frères' appears in the lower right exergue.
