Obverse description Central field occupied by the crowned royal arms of Portugal, the shield displaying the quinas (five escutcheons in saltire charged with bezants) and the bordure of castles, all beneath a crown of elaborate floral design. The mint mark 'R-Ɔ' (the retrograde 'C' denoting the Porto mint) flanks the shield on either side. A beaded inner circle encloses the central device, with the royal legend running continuously around the periphery in Gothic lettering. The overall composition is characteristic of the high-fineness Portuguese gold coinage of the Manueline and Joanine periods, struck by the hammered technique on a broad, irregular flan.
